Social innovations are key to sustainable social change. A new publication shows how they can be strategically integrated into higher education institutions and innovation policy. It is aimed at decision-makers, researchers, educators, and transfer professionals.

When academia, politics, business, and civil society collaborate, solutions to complex societal challenges emerge. The new publication from the SIGU Platform, developed by a team at the Social Research Center, provides practical insights into how universities can foster these processes through research, teaching, real-world laboratories, and social innovation labs—and how they can improve even further in the future. The brochure “Strengthening Social Innovations at German Universities” is also a result of collaboration within the SIGU Platform’s Science Network, which over the past three years has advanced exchange, strategic development, and the visibility of social innovations in Germany.

The Science Team of the SIGU Platform, consisting of sfs colleagues Christoph Kaletka, Katrin Bauer, Ralf Kopp, and Daniel Krüger, as well as former member Marthe Zirngiebl, has, together with the assistants Carlotta Buchholz and Alexander Dederichs, compiled the results of three years of network development and systematic exchange of experiences in this publication. Highlights include initial implications from a study on social innovations at German universities, as well as a series of ideas that could contribute to the stronger integration of social innovations into the German higher education system.

The publication, which appears in German, is now available online free of charge:
