The Jos Berghman Welfare Studies Stipend enables international early-career researchers in the fields of sociology of social policy, social work and related disciplines to spend three months in Leuven conducting research. Jennifer Eckhardt has been invited to take up this residency in spring 2026.

Dr. Jennifer Eckhardt is a visiting researcher at the ReSpond Research Group on Social, Political and Population Change at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Institute of Sociology of KU Leuven, one of Europe's oldest universities. The ReSpond Research Group studies social policy, public attitudes towards the welfare state, population and family dynamics, and their interactions in European welfare states.

As part of her fellowship, Jennifer Eckhardt is working on a publication that analyzes perceptions of need in the European context. One of her goals is to combine her own qualitative findings from previous studies with the empirical expertise and comparative perspectives of her colleagues in Leuven. In the long run, the results should be applicable to the further development of innovative approaches in the field of poverty reduction, but the research stay also serves to deepen international cooperation and to establish contacts with local colleagues.
