Report about unskilled work (simple work) in the Dortmund region

© P. Ittermann
The report shows the extent and facets of unskilled work in the Dortmund region and develops perspectives for this form of employment.

Contrary to popular forecasts, the proportion of employees in jobs that do not require formal qualifications remains constant at one-fifth of all dependent employees in Germany. In the Dortmund region, too, low-skilled labour is a central pillar of the regional economy. In order to outline the status quo and, above all, the prospects for low-skilled work in the region, the Social Research Centre, in cooperation with the local economic development agency, evaluated labour market statistics and conducted interviews with chambers, labour administration authorities, trade unions, employers' associations and practitioners from company management and works councils. Unskilled/Simple work can help to attract/retain labour and reduce unemployment if simple workers experience material and immaterial appreciation, they work under good conditions and their mobility is used on the basis of transparent forecasts of sector-specific requirements.
